The Coordinate System
2
Vocabulary
3
Coordinate system:
  • system of a horizontal number line and a vertical number line that intersect.
4

5
x-axis:
  • the horizontal number line in the coordinate system
6

7
y-axis:
  • the vertical number line in the coordinate system.
8

9
Origin:
  • The center.
  • Where the number lines intersect.
  • Where both lines are zero (0).
  • (0,0)
10

11
quadrant:
  • The system is separated into four parts.  These parts are called quadrants.
12

13
ordered pair:
  • Points graphed on a coordinate system are identified by ordered pair.
14

15

16
x-coordinate:
  • the first number in the ordered pair.
17

18
y-coordinate:
  • the second number in the ordered pair.
19

20
An ordered pair will be like this:
  • (x-coordinate, y-coordinate)
  • (3, 2)
21
"Starting at the origin:"
  • Starting at the origin:
  • the x-coordinate tells you how far left or right.
  • the y-coordinate tells you how far up or down.
22

23

24
"the ordered pair"
  •  the ordered pair
  • (3, 2)
  •  tells you to start at the origin, (0, 0) and go to the right 3 and up 2.
25
"The ordered pair"
  • The ordered pair
  • (-3,6)
  • tells you to go left 3 and up 6.
26
"The ordered pair"
  • The ordered pair
  • (8,-1)
  •  tells you to go the right 8 and down 1.

  • (5,3) (6,8)
  • (10,3) (7,4)
  • (8,4) (5,3)
  • (9,8)
