BIOLOGY
**If you are absent, click on the My Homework link to the left. Check PowerSchool for missing assignments and stop in after school to get caught up. **It is especially important to make up missed labs. The easiest way to do this is to get a pass to come in period 2 another day in the same 6-day cycle. Welcome to Biology! I am looking forward to our year together as we explore the living world. It is my goal that you will be prepared by June to perform well on the Living Environment Regents exam. Here’s what you’ll need to know for the upcoming year: EXPECTATIONS Before we can begin discussing biology, certain expectations are required of everyone in my classroom. 1. Be on time 2. Be prepared 3. Be a hard worker 4. Be respectful and polite 5. No food or drinks The above expectations are to remind you that you are young adults in a professional learning environment. It is my job to teach you the concepts and skills of biology, but these routines will help you take responsibility for your own learning. When students do not meet the above expectations, I will address the concern on an individual basis. If the issue is not resolved, parents will be notified.
REQUIRED MATERIALS Please bring the following materials to class each day: · pen and/or pencil · folder or 3-ring binder to keep notes and handouts · loose-leaf paper · text book (will be notified when necessary to bring to class)

GRADING Your understanding of the material covered in class and lab is demonstrated through various assignments. Grades are calculated as follows:
Tests & Quizzes... 40% Labs... 35% HW, Projects, Participation... 25% Total 100%
Tests & Quizzes (40%) Tests are given at the end of each unit and include multiple-choice and short answer questions from previous Regents exams. Quizzes are shorter than tests and assess your understanding of a specific concept rather than a whole unit of information.
Labs (35%) Labs are performed during your lab period, as well as during class. Therefore, it is imperative that you attend all classes and labs. Labs relate to the content we discuss in class and are completed in groups of 2-4 students. During your lab period, instructions are provided in the classroom and you will enter the lab area only when given permission. Labs are kept in a folder I provide for you in the classroom. Late labs lose 10% per day. Homework/Projects/Participation (25%) · Homework must be completed by the beginning of the class period the day it is due. Late work loses 10% per day. · Projects range from posters to presentations to other creative assessments. Specific requirements and grading rubrics are provided at the beginning of each project. · Participation includes attending class every day, following the expectations, and completing class work. Credit is lost in this category for unexcused absences or behavior that takes away from the positive classroom environment.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION · 3 tardies to class = detention…so be on time! · If you are absent, please check the daily folders for missed work, the board for upcoming due dates, and a classmate for any other details. If you need to check with me, please do so at an appropriate time. For an excused absence, you have as many days as you missed (up to a maximum of 3) to complete and turn in missed assignments. Please note how many days it is late and why or you will lose credit. · Incomplete assignments are not acceptable. For you to receive credit, every problem must be attempted. If something is challenging, that’s a good thing! If you use your resources, you will be amazed at how much you can learn. ·
