There will be an information meeting on May 12 at 2:20 pm in the Middle School Gymnasium with Mr. Maher for the 2026 Summer Driving Program. Students that can't attend the meeting can start picking up info/registration forms from Mr. Maher starting on May 13th during the school day.

Students will receive information on course requirements, a registration form and course schedule. If a student can't attend this meeting due to schedule conflict, a registration form can be picked up during the school day from Mr. Maher in the Middle School Gymnasium anytime after the meeting on May 12.

Qualifications

There will be two separate sessions (First session is July 1 - 23; second session is July 24 - Aug. 14). Students only need to register/attend one full session to complete the course. Drive times will meet daily (either 7:00-8:30am / 8:30-10am / 12-1:30pm / 1:30-3pm) and Lecture time will meet daily from 10-11:30am.  First session students must be 16 before July 1 and must already have their learner's permit or junior driver's license before the start of the course. Second session students must be 16 before July 24 and must already have their learner's permit or junior driver's license before the start of the course.

Students can request which session they would like, and rank which drive time slot works the best.  Mr. Maher will do the best he can to accommodate all requests, but there are no guarantees.

Students are allowed one absence the entire course

Absences MUST be made up before the end of the course or no certificate will be issued. Students are required by NY State DMV to complete 24 hours of classroom instruction and 24 hours of lab instruction (actual in-car experience) to complete the course. Students must pass BOTH the lecture & in-car portions of the class to be issued their certificate of completion (MV-285 FORM). No academic credits will be given for this course.

The courses are offered free in 2026

The Driver ed course will be FREE this summer. But only 32 slots are available (16 per session).  Registration forms are due back to Mr. Maher by end of school day on Thursday, May 28.  There will be a random lottery conducted and families will be informed via Parent Square of their assignment on Monday, June 1st.  A waiting list will be formed for students not selected in the lottery, should any students need to drop out after the schedule has been filled.

Students need to be at least 16 and have their learners permit / Jr. License when their session begins (not necessarily when they register).

There is a limit of 16 spots available during each session. Registration and requests will be honored on a first come first served basis. If you have a specific need, be sure to register early.  Any other questions, please contact Mr. Maher at jmaher@Midlakes.org or call extension 6135.
