The Midlakes Work Experience Program again sent students to the Voluntary Service Office at Canandaigua VA Medical Center to help area veterans.
Fourteen high school students visited the VA in December to sort and wrap roughly 160 gift packages that were distributed to veterans. The Voluntary Service Office selects what goes into the gift packages based on community donations.
The Work Experience Program began in 2003 with the goal of helping students transition into the working world by providing them with academic, vocational and independent living skills. Students can also earn credit towards a special credential with their diploma through their work in the program. Several students have worked at area hospitals, grocery stores and other businesses as part of the program. Others have helped out at the high school’s coffee shop, Sips Café.
The volunteer work by the students in December marked the 16th consecutive year of helping out at the Canandaigua VA Medical Center.
