Superintendent's Message: Welcome Back From Winter Break!

JAN. 2, 2021 — Happy New Year! I hope you and your families experienced a healthy and relaxing holiday season! As we prepare for the return to school on Monday, Jan. 3, I want to share a few updates and reminders.

Most importantly, we ask for your cooperation in following important health and safety protocols as we prepare for a successful return to school on January 3. Only by working together can we limit the number of positive cases of COVID-19 and avoid quarantines ordered by the Department of Health.

  • Please keep your children home from school if they are experiencing any symptom(s) of COVID-19 or you suspect any exposure to a positive case. Please contact one of our school nurses if you have any questions.
  • Please remind your children of the importance of good mask-wearing. Wearing a mask properly is an important strategy in preventing the spread of COVID-19 and avoiding quarantine following an exposure. Please speak with your children about wearing their masks so they cover the mouth and nose and wearing them on the school bus and indoors at school.
  • Please remind your children of the importance of good hand and respiratory hygiene, including washing hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, using hand sanitizer regularly, avoiding unnecessary touching of the mouth and nose, and sneezing/coughing into their arm.

We continue to collaborate with the Ontario County Department of Health to make decisions and implement protocols to keep students safely in school. As always, our ability to remain open for in-person instruction is dependent upon available staffing, which we monitor closely.  If it becomes necessary to switch to remote learning due to staffing shortages, we will notify you with as much notice as possible. At this time, we expect students and staff to be in-person on January 3, unless they are feeling ill or have been exposed to a positive case.

As you may have seen in the news, New York State is providing school districts with a supply of rapid COVID-19 tests to support healthy in-person instruction.  Our tests will be distributed via the Wayne-Finger Lakes BOCES but have not yet arrived.  We expect the tests to arrive on campus sometime on Monday, January 3. In the meantime, we are evaluating the best use of the rapid tests to support healthy in-person instruction.  We are considering options recommended by NYSDOH. I plan to send a follow-up communication with more details regarding the rapid tests by the end of the day on January 3.

Thank you for your cooperation as we work together to create a safe and healthy school environment and support the continuation of in-person instruction.  Please continue to visit our school website for updates regarding additional COVID-19 protocols and strategies designed to promote safe in-person school attendance.

Sincerely,
Matt Sickles, Superintendent
