When Athletic Director John Lombardi received a call about the Marine Corps Coordinating Council’s annual Toys for Tots drive he did what any former Marine would do.
Lombardi sprung into action by working with coaches, student-athletes, and boosters in Midlake’s athletics program to donate several large boxes and bags of sports equipment and other supplies.
New York State Senator Pamela Helming, who represents the 54th District and lives in Canandaigua, was so impressed that she stopped by Midlakes High School on Dec. 17 to thank all who participated in the toy drive. Helming is a long-time supporter of the Marine’s Toys for Tots initiative.
"Midlakes really stepped up," said state Sen. Pamela Helming, who visited Midlakes in December to present the district a special citation for its efforts. She was joined by Lombardi, Superintendent Matt Sickles, student-athletes Kate Mahoney and Kyle Peck-Elzey, and Dave Brisbane and Jim Wicker, both of the Memorial Day Detachment No. 468 of the Marine Corps League.
"When I was in the Marines, we always helped with the Toys for Tots holiday drive, and it is a great organization to work with," Lombardi said. "I have been on many delivery opportunities, and to see the look on people’s faces when they receive these toys warms your heart."
