Capital Project Update

The District, based on the advice of architect and construction manager, decided to act on the potential for favorable bidding by moving up the timeline for the $15.6 million capital improvement project approved by voters in 2019. The new plan was to submit the project to NYSED in two phases to receive Phase 1 approval in February and put the project to bid in early March.

Approval from the New York State Education Department has been delayed due to a large number of districts hoping to capitalize on competitive pricing. As a result, Midlakes has yet to receive Phase 1 approval and now expects bidding on the project to be delayed later in the spring. These delays would likely lead to higher bids and significantly impact the start of school in September 2021. Also, any construction this summer would have made the Elementary School completely unavailable, forcing all summer programs to be held in the Middle/High School.

Understanding that summer programs will be critical for closing learning gaps and the importance of a successful start of school in September, the District has decided to return to its original timeline with work on the capital improvement project. Work on the capital project is anticipated to begin in the spring of 2022. Therefore, no construction will begin this summer and all summer academic programs will be held in their regular locations.
