Two Midlakes students have been recognized by the New York State School Music Association for outstanding solo performances and were invited to perform this month with other top regional musicians.

Matt Cannan, a seventh-grader, performed with the Junior High Area All-State Band Festival held on Nov. 1 and 2 at the Greece Athena Performing Arts Center.

Senior Abby Sloane, a percussionist, was invited to perform with the Senior High Area All-State Concert Band on Nov. 15 and 16 at Letchworth High School.

Sloane and Cannan are both children of musicians. Cannan’s parents both teach music. His mother, Melissa, often performs with Midlakes school bands. Sloane’s father plays with the Perinton Concert Band.

Cannan started playing Baritone in third grade and has performed in about 25 concerts, including a Tuba Christmas concert in Syracuse. He is a member of the chorus and the school’s jazz band. He credits his parents and his teachers for helping improve as a musician.

"Matt is a highly-talented seventh-grade euphonium player who excels in music and shows outstanding dedication through weekly practice," said Joe Godfrey, Cannan’s music teacher at Midlakes. "Matt loves music and his hard work is paying off."

Sloane has played an instrument since third grade. She knows how to play the piano and is learning how to play clarinet and trumpet. She has also played the timpani, snare drum and marimba. She takes lessons at the Eastman School of Music when she isn’t working on bringing a new Debate Club to school or other extra-curricular activity.

"I just kind of grew up around music," Sloane said. "It gives you a break from everything and provides a chance to be super creative."
