A Midlakes student was recognized by the Ontario County Sheriff’s Office with a “Do the Right Award” for some quick-thinking and helpful actions during a medical emergency suffered by a school bus driver in March.

Joshua Newton sprang into action after noticing his bus began to swerve and the driver was not acting normal. He then made his way to the front and had the driver pull the bus over. Joshua, 14, contacted a dispatcher for help, got other students off the bus and assisted first responders arriving at the scene.

Ontario County Sheriff Kevin Henderson, Undersheriff David Frasca, Event Coordinator for Back the Blue Donna SchaertlSuperintendent Matt Sickles, Deputy Bob Holland, and Joshua’s family were on hand to recognize Joshua on Aug. 12 at the District’s transportation facility.

"Joshua responded so professionally that it was asked, 'Who was the adult talking on the radio?'" Holland said. "I would like to commend Joshua on how he handled himself in an emergency. I look forward to watching him grow and seeing the many ways he will be helping this community in the future."

Holland said that the bus driver is doing well and is back to work.
