Superintendent’s Message: District Developing New Reporting Tool

SEPT. 9, 2020 — Midlakes is dedicated to communicating positive cases of COVID-19 and related quarantines during the 2021-2022 school year in a manner that is protective of personal privacy and informative to the community, but not overwhelming. We understand the importance of sharing the status of positive cases and quarantines, but we also recognize that daily messages can be seen as too much.

The District is currently building a new section of the school website to report active cases and quarantines. This information will be updated on the school website weekly.  It is our hope to have this tool in place by the end of next week. We will also include a link to the NYSDOH COVID-19 portal, which includes school by school COVID data.  This portal is scheduled to be reactivated by NYSDOH next week.

It is important to remind the Midlakes community that while the District assists with communication to individual families, all periods of isolation and quarantine are determined by the Department of Health and subject to change based on its investigations. The school district has no authority to order anyone to isolate or quarantine.  However, we do have a legal responsibility to exclude a student from school if they are under an isolation or quarantine order by the Department of Health.

Until we complete the weekly online reporting tool for positive cases and quarantines, I want you to be aware of current information. Since Monday, Sept. 6, 2021, the Ontario County Department of Health has informed us of one positive staff case at Midlakes Elementary School, two positive student cases at Midlakes Elementary School, one positive case at Midlakes Middle/High School, and twenty-seven quarantines at Midlakes Elementary School. The Department of Health has confirmed that these cases and quarantines originated outside of school. Specific students are being quarantined as a precaution and anyone who has tested positive is currently in isolation, as directed by the Department of Health.

We will continue to work closely with the Department of Health, monitor suspected and confirmed cases of COVID-19, and report data on the school website weekly.  I will send a notification with more details when the weekly information is available on the school website.

Please continue to follow our health and safety protocols and consult with one of our school nurses if you have any questions regarding symptoms or exposure.  By working together, we can help prevent the spread of COVID-19 and support the continuation of in-person learning.

Thank you for your patience and cooperation.

Matt Sickles, Superintendent
