Superintendent's Message: Feedback Needed on Federal Aid

NOV. 12, 2021 — Last spring, approximately $4 million in federal stimulus funds were allocated to Midlakes as part of the American Rescue Plan (ARP). On June 8, we held a Public Hearing to collect feedback from community members and stakeholder groups on the best use of these funds to prioritize in-person learning and close learning gaps.

We have since submitted our application for the Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief (ESSER) portion of the ARP funds, totaling approximately $1.7 million.

It is now time to prepare our application for the remaining $2.3 million of our ARP ESSER funds, which are designated as state reserve funds. The application identifies specific options for using these funds to address learning loss over a three-year period (2021-2024).

To further assist us in using these funds to impact student achievement and submit an application that meets the identified criteria, we are once again seeking stakeholder feedback. A survey has been posted on the school website.

Please help us by completing this brief survey by November 23. We will use the information submitted by the community to inform our planning process and completion of the application, which is due on December 15. A final spending proposal will be presented to the Board of Education on December 13.

The survey is aligned to the application by identifying spending categories that are approved by the New York State Education Department.  The survey includes an open-ended question that allows for additional suggestions.  These suggestions will be considered if they can be justified under the rules of the application.

The last question on the survey asks for your input on the desired characteristics of a Midlakes student, which will help drive some of our work related to our recently adopted Strategic Plan.

Thank you for assisting us in using our federal funds to support our students in the most impactful ways possible.

Sincerely,

Matt Sickles, superintendent
